Feb. 13, 2010 – Excelling in arguments on issues of mandatory BMI testing for overweight students, Hecht Residential College took first place in the Fourth Annual Arsht Ethics Debates at SportsFest.
Hecht, the defending champion, defeated Eaton Residential College in the final round of debating under scoring by a panel of nine judges comprising university and community leaders.
Hecht team members: Marie Cushmore, Margaret Capobianco, Doug Aguililla and Martin Lopez were presented with the 2010 Arsht Ethics Debates at SportsFest trophy by UM Ethics Programs Directors Anita Cava and Ken Goodman.
The debate format included statements, rebuttals and responses to judges’ questions. Judges scored the teams based on quality of arguments, focus on ethical issues and other criteria.
By winning the competition, Hecht team members earned 100 SportsFest points for their residential college and $200 gift crads for each member to the UM Bookstore.
The Arsht Ethics Debates at SportsFest are part of a suite of activities sponsored by Ethics Programs donor Adrienne Arsht, known collectively as the Arsht Ethics Initiatives. In addition to the debates, gifts from Ms. Arsht support faculty-student research projects on “ethics and community,” a distinguished speaker series and other activities.
The Arsht and other ethics debate activities are coordinated by the UM Ethics Society, an undergraduate club that fosters ethics activities across the curriculum and professions.
