Matching MBA students with local nonprofit organizations for a summer, the MBA Consultants to Nonprofits Program provides a valuable experience solving business problems in a setting that promotes a spirit of civic engagement and community service. In addition to applying their skills and building their networks, students gain a first-hand perspective on the importance of businesses and the community working together for mutual benefit.
According to MBA student Omar Paredes, “The Red Cross, even though it’s a nonprofit, is still a brand. Most of my projects target college kids. So I developed certain campaigns that I hope will attract them to volunteer and donate, whether it is with money or their time.”
Students spend 10 weeks advising nonprofit organizations on basic business applications ranging from accounting and financial planning to supporting human resource and marketing functions. Each student receives a stipend as well as the satisfaction of seeing their labor have tangible effects almost immediately.
Each year, more than 20 students and 20 nonprofits apply to participate in the program, which is sponsored by Adam Carlin, MBA ‘94, principal of Bermont/Carlin Group, a local Morgan Stanley Smith Barney affiliate, and the Business Ethics Program. Additional support has been provided as noted below.
